Retrospective Analysis

2009 General Election

Independent candidate Sadashivrao Mandlik secured victory over Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje Shahu. Despite running as an independent, he garnered crucial cross-party support from INC, BJP, and SHS, solidifying his long-standing influence.

2014 General Election

Dhananjay Mahadik (NCP) won by a slim margin of ~3% over Sanjay Mandlik (SHS). Mahadik's campaign received powerful endorsements from influential INC figure Satej Patil and NCP leader Hasan Mushrif.

2019 General Election

Sanjay Mandlik (SHS) secured a massive victory, heavily backed by INC leader Satej Patil due to political differences with Dhananjay Mahadik. Mandlik secured a substantial margin of votes across all six assembly segments.

Voting Inclination Analysis

Maratha ~30%Divided

Traditionally supported INC in elections due to the strong leadership of figures like Udaysinh Gaikwad and Sadashivrao Mandlik. In the 2019 GE, a significant number supported SHS due to a Maratha candidate. The community relies on individual leaders rather than political parties.

Jain & Lingayat ~27%BJP

The BJP has been the favored choice of traditional Jain and Lingayat voters, primarily due to the party's Pro-Hindu ideology and adequate representation within its organization. A smaller segment opts for INC based on organizational representation.

Mahar & Matang (SC) ~11%INC Shift to BJP-SHS

Historically traditional supporters of the INC and NCP. However, recent elections indicate a noticeable shift towards the BJP-SHS alliance, attributed to SC communities benefiting from government schemes like PM Awas Yojana and Free Ration.

Significant Electoral Issues

Kolhapur South/North, Radhanagari

Flood Infrastructure

For several years, Kolhapur has faced disruptions during monsoons due to uncontrolled construction in catchment areas along the Krishna River and excess water contamination from Almatti Dam. Compensation promises often go unfulfilled.

Border Villages (865 Villages)

Maharashtra-Karnataka Border

Kolhapur has been entangled in a border dispute for many years. As a consequence, villages along the border suffer from a severe lack of development and inadequate basic facilities, raising constant demands for developmental initiatives.

Kolhapur District

Sugarcane Cooperative Rate

The district is home to numerous sugar factories, but farmers express strong discontent, claiming they are not receiving fair prices. Allegedly, factories collaborate to enforce a single suppressed price.

Kolhapur South & North

Road Infrastructure

City roads are in deplorable condition with potholes visible on almost every street. Severe accidents have occurred on the road connecting Cyber Chowk to Rajarampuri, which hasn't been resurfaced in five years.

Kolhapur City

Municipal Limitation

Upgraded to a Municipal Corporation in 1972, but no further extensions have been made due to conflicts between two political groups. This halts the city's expansion and prevents it from benefiting from State or Central government schemes.

Stage 05

Political Leadership Assessment

Member of Parliament

Sanjay Mandlik

SHS

Performance

Perception

Held in regard for his father's legacy, but criticized for a lack of regular public engagement. This inaccessibility has negatively impacted his image, diminishing re-election prospects.
